One of the expenses underwritten by the city and not the guilds was the “great giants,” allotted 500 pesos for their conservation and repair. Sometimes the cost was less than this sum, but it was often not enough because they took a lot of care. One of the less costly years was 1636, when Don Baltasar de Guevara and the corregidor contracted with the painter Cristóbal Franco to spruce up the giants, giving them new heads and faces, reclothing two of them, adding gold and silver trappings to all of their clothes, giving them new hair, redoing the dragon and giving it a coat of oil paint, dressing ten little devils, and repairing and refurbishing the awning, all for 400 pesos. But on other occasions the cost far exceeded this. In 1638 the directors of the fiestas of the Holy Sacrament, Juan de Alcocer and Cristóbal Velasco, reported in writing that the clothing of the giants was so torn and shabby that it was hardly suitable for lining. They sought to have new clothes made for all of them, from lustrous Chinese silk, decorated with designs and flowers in gold and silver, lining the new clothing with the old for longer wear.
